Software Updates

Aster checks the official update feed once daily in the background by default, enabled on first launch without a prompt. Disable Automatically Check for Updates in Settings → General → Update if desired.

  • Automatically Check for Updates: off leaves only manual Check Now.
  • Automatically Download and Install: off by default. Enabling downloads silently and installs on app exit without interrupting terminals. It is not default because terminals may run long-lived commands.
  • Update Channel: Stable receives releases; Preview receives earlier testing builds with greater risk of problems. Switching from Preview to Stable does not downgrade; the current preview remains until stable catches up.
  • Check Now: equivalent to Aster → Check for Updates…. Its status dot is gray for not checked/checking, green for current, orange for an update, and red for failure.

Updates request only Aster's official feed. Downloads must pass Aster signature and macOS notarization checks before installation. Update checks send no usage data or system information.

If the whole group is disabled with an automatic-updates-unavailable explanation, this is a source-built development version without an update feed; download a release from the project's Releases page.

Versions 0.4.1 and earlier have no updater. Download one newer DMG manually; subsequent updates can be automatic.
