Named Workspaces

A workspace is a set of tabs. A window can have several, such as one per project, and each can contain multiple tabs. Workspaces can also be remote.

  • Location: the upper sidebar lists workspace names/tab counts and highlights the current one. The tab-section heading identifies its workspace.
  • Create: workspace + or File → New Workspace… (⌘⇧N) starts a home-directory Shell. New tabs via +/⌘T belong to that workspace. The host picker chooses Local for the current window, an existing machine for remote, or a not-yet-added host/alias to add it first.
  • Switch: sidebar, File → Next Workspace (⌃⌘]) / previous (⌃⌘[), or Open Quickly's Workspaces category. Terminals/Agents continue and notifications still arrive; clicking one switches to its workspace.
  • Top/bottom layouts: the leftmost tab-bar button shows the workspace and offers switching/create/rename.
  • Rename: double-click the sidebar workspace, its context menu, or File → Rename Workspace….
  • Move tabs: tab context-menu Move to Workspace.
  • Delete: workspace context menu or File → Delete Workspace… closes its tabs, recoverable through Recently Closed. At least one workspace remains.
  • Old windows formerly created by ⌘⇧N can still reopen from the switcher after closing.
  • Remote switching leaves tasks running; closing ends all processes after confirmation.
  • CLI: aster-cli workspace list, aster-cli workspace open <name>, aster-cli workspace new --name <name> [--machine <machine>].
